Activity #54: Investigating Human Traits


Today students investigated six different human characteristics including eye color, height, arm span, PTC tasting, tongue rolling, and finger crossing. They recorded their results and analyzed how much variation was in the class by creating a graph with the traits on it.

Current Science Magazine


Today students are reading the current science magazine. They are reading different articles about events that are happening around the world. As they read the magazine, student will answer analysis questions as they read. They will also analyze a graph while reading about drug problems. The worksheet is due at the end of class

Unit C Micro-Life Exam


Today and tomorrow during block days, students will take the unit C exam. It includes multiple choice and short answer. Students will also write an one world essay that addresses the guiding question: Which is better, the individual or society? If students do not finish the essay they will have until Monday to turn it in. On Monday, we will begin unit D: Genetics. Friday I will have a sub because of Science meetings. Students will be reading a current science magazine and answering questions about each article.

Unit C Review


Today students reviewed Unit C: Micro-life. They reviewed important concepts and ideas. Review activities 30-53 in your notebooks. You will also be answering the guiding question for your One World Essay tomorrow. Test test has 30 questions including 4 short constructed responses. Please review: the five kingdoms, infectious diseases, microbe, antibiotics, vaccines, timeline, and cell characteristics.

Activity #53 Maracondo Fever


For the next three days in life science students will be investigating a mysterious disease called Maracondo Fever. Each group of four will have a game board and will be collecting evidence of the disease. There is a doctor, veterinarian, ecologist, and epidemiologist in each group who are in charge of specific evidence and data. Teams will make their final hypothesis of what is transmitting this disease.

Activity 51-52 Antibiotic Resistance


Today students read about bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics. While students read, they took Cornell notes about the reading and then wrote a summary about why bacteria are resisting antibiotics. The three reasons we discussed are:
1. People are not finishing their full course of medication
2. People are taking antibiotics when they are not sick
3. People are taking antibiotics for the wrong microbial disease

Activity #49-50 Penicillin


Welcome Back....I hope you all had a great break! Today students started off class by discussing their Science Fair grades and January 10th which is next Monday were we will hold a school wide science fair from 6-7 pm. Judges will score all the projects and awards and winners will be announced at 6:30. Next students watched a video and answered questions about the discovery of penicillin and how it has effected us today. Then students compared vaccines and antibiotics. Finally students wrote a persuasive letter to Ms. Lanier or Mr. T about our bacteria experiment and asked them to clean specific areas in our school where bacteria grew the most.

Hint: There will be a quiz tomorrow over unit C!
